Home Services Clinical Pilates

Pilates is a strengthening and lengthening form of exercise that focuses on your core (trunk) muscles while also training your arms and legs. Mat Pilates is based on the original exercises Joseph Pilates developed in Germany in the early 20th Century to strengthen his own body as a very young man and then began teaching others.

Clinical Pilates focuses on posture, core stability, balance, control, strength, flexibility, and breathing. Clinical Pilates is often used in conjunction with physiotherapy as a means of treating a variety of injuries – particularly those of the neck and back. This is based on literature that demonstrates strong evidence to support the use of therapeutic exercise in the management of patients with injuries, especially low back pain where recent research advocates the retraining of the deep stabilizing muscles for those patients. Clinical Pilates focuses on the retraining and recruitment of these stabilizing muscles (core stability) as well as improving posture, strength and flexibility.

Evidence supports the use of the Pilates method in the prevention and rehabilitation of back injuries. By retraining the deep abdominal and spinal muscles, Pilates, in combination with correct back care and advice, can help to prevent the recurrence of back pain.

Mat Pilates includes over 500 exercises and can be practiced anywhere, modified for any age,  body or fitness level and it is even possible to practice the modifications of these exercises in a chair.

Clinical Pilates is a series of these mat based exercises in various different body positions which have been adapted by physiotherapists to make them more suitable for patients with back and neck pain and those recovering from injury.

Pilates is a mind, body, and spirit practice with benefits that include improved posture, better coordination and balance, increased lung capacity, improved concentration and focus, increased body awareness, stress management, and injury prevention & recovery. Clinical Pilates is a great choice for everyone from beginners to advanced level because the exercises can not only build in difficulty, but every exercise can be modified to decrease or increase the level of challenge.

As you progress in your practice you will also notice improvements in breathing, focus, stress management, and body awareness.
