How can Acupuncture help fertility?

Acupuncture is a treatment for a variety of conditions and here our acupuncturist, Renate Blacker, would like to share some of the ways in which acupuncture can be used to improve fertility. Renate has been practising acupuncture for about seventeen years and is affiliated to the Zita West Clinic – a specialist reproductive unit in London.  Good qualitative research is available which supports the following information about acupuncture and fertility:-

Acupuncture improves blood flow to the uterus which in turn helps with the implantation of an embryo.

It increases endometrial lining thickness and quality which is associated with better IVF outcomes and pregnancy rates.

It helps to regulate hormones. Acupuncture is shown to have an effect on normalizing Gonadatropin-releasing hormone (GNrH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), oestrogen and progesterone.

It reduces stress-related symptoms which in turn have an effect on conception and pregnancy.  The calming effect of acupuncture may be because it encourages the inhibition of the sympathetic nervous system and increases the release of beta endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.

Acupuncture is a pleasant, relaxing experience which will hopefully result in a healthy pregnancy and baby.
