The Benefits of Massage in the Workplace

It is becoming more and more common for people to spend extended periods of time sitting down, whether this be at a desk, on the phone or a PC or commuting to and from work by car, train or plane. For your body to function well the muscles and joints need to move around so sitting for up to nine hours a day can cause muscles to become short and tight and posture to begin to change.  In turn, people start to suffer with problems such as neck and shoulder pain, low back pain and tension headaches. Regular massage can help release tight muscles and help improve posture and mobility.

The stress of work and busy lifestyles can also lead to a build-up of tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders. There are many benefits of massage which can reduce stress, help boost your immune system and improve sleep.  More and more people now recognise the benefits of regular massage to help manage the symptoms caused by sitting for long periods of time.

In addition to massage there are other things that you can do, or be mindful of, to help reduce pain:

  • Take regular breaks during the workday (even if this is simply getting up and walking around the office);
  • Exercise;
  • Making sure your work area is set up so you can sit with the correct posture;
  • Stretching;
  • Massage tools such as foam rollers and massage balls.
